Another big theme was government corruption thrillers, like "The Constant Gardener" "Commander in Chief." Many people feel that, the the big acceptance of Brokeback Mountain, a story about gay lovers, goes to show that Americans are willing to embrace a love story in any form. "It has proven you can never categorize a region or place or stereotype them," said Lee the films director. With all the nominations, many feel the Academy Awards are next for the movie. Music and comedy are also a big thing for the awards this year.

Execution- In San Quetin, California a 76 year old inmates was executed on Tuesday, just minutes after his birthday, making him the oldest person executed in the state. Some people felt that it was cruel to put an elderly, blind man, bound for a wheelchair to cruel and unusual punishment. Clarence Ray Allen was convicted of arranging the murders of four people. Allen expressed his love for his family and friends and the other death-row inmates in his final satement. Allen ended his statement by saying,"It's a good day to die. Thank you very much. I love you all. Goodbye." Allen was blind and moslty deaf, due to his battle with diabetes. Allen as lifted out of his wheel chair and was assisted by guards to the death chamber. Allen was already serving a life sentence for his part in his 17 year old sons girlfriend death, and when he was in prison he planned the death of the singe witness and two bystanders. Allen tried an appeal, which was turned down hours before his execution.

Drought- A huge drought is causing many people, mainly framers trouble. In Canadian Oklahoma, farmer Bill Lawson, is one of the many people who might lose everything. Lawson moves his herd from puddle to puddle in an effort to try and find food and water for his heard. Everybody is afraid of grass fires, and everybody's hoping for rain. Lawson knows that if rain does not come, his 50 years of farming will end. The drought is plaguing many mid-western states, and many like Texas are having the worst drought in years, and almost every state effected by the drought his inches away from there usual rain fall. Oklahoma has been the hardest hid state so far. In Oklahoma, some of the lakes and ponds have dropped feet below their normal depth. If conditions don't change, all of Oklahoma and others states crops might be ruined, causing a huge problems for all Americans.

KU loses again (haha)- Ku lost to Missouri with a final score of 86/89. Even though for some players like Thomas Gardner, who scored a career-high 40 points, Mizzou still came out on top. KU and Mizzou have been rivalries, with KU winning nine of the last 11 big games, with Mizzou only winning two. Even though both teams have had a pretty decent year, the game marked the first time since 19991 in which neither team was ranked nationally.

Government blog topic 2 for 2nd semester

Golden Globes- Brokeback Mountain, which deals with homosexuality, was one of the biggest winners of the night, with four wins, one of the wins was best drama. With his family with him, they have been questioning him. A lot of the heated questing revolves around the topic of abortion. Alito said, "the Constitution provides clear language on issues like freedom of speech, but is less clear on abortion. "Another huge question was how he felt on the 1973 Wade vs. Roe case, which legalize abortion. Alito, in a sense never gave good direct answers, But Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, called Alito's unwillingness to directly address Roe vs. Wade "troubling" and said he could only conclude the nominee would overrule the precedent if given the chance.

Americans Split- American's are becoming more spilt over the issue, of using wiretaps, before having a warrant. A poll was taken and 50 percent believes its ok. The taps would be used, in the a case where a person was believed to be linked with theorists. The Bush administration contends that the congressional resoution authorizing military action after September 11, 2001, gave the President the Ability to use wiretaps, without the approval of a special panel of judges. Times have changed, and so has peoples opinions. Back in 2001, 60 percent thought the new measures taken to combat terrisom was just right, and now according to the new polls, Americans are spilt almost 50/50 over the issue.

Hunting grizzles- In Salmon Idaho, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service initiated a public debate on Monday to lift federal protections of grizzly bears in Yellowstone National Park. If the measure is passed then it could allow the hunting of the bears in the surrounding Western states. The bears have been hunted for years and in 1975 they were placed as threanted under the federal Endangered Species Act. There population has risen from around 130 to 600 around the Yellowstone area, promoting the government to take the bears off the endagered list. Each state has crafted a plan to allow hunting of the bears under certain conditions, like if a bear was a public nuisance to people. The plan to lift the grizzles' federal protection has some powerful environmental groups in an outcry. Some people feel that if this passes, thousands of thousands of people across the nation will apply for likeness, and the hunting will again pose a problem, leading us back with the bears once again on the endagered list.

hello

Once again the lazy fairy graced me with her presence. type='text'>What happened?

On my last post there is supposed to be 4 web links, I followed directions, and I guess it didn't work! I know what I'm going to be doing during homeroom tomorrow, bugging Mr. Fletcher! Anyways, Alex and I went and saw the Chronicles of Narnia. That movie rocks! I loved it, it is one of the best computer animated movies, I have ever seen. Well, it's even one of the best movies I've ever seen period. I can't wait until it comes out on DVD, and I hope they make the rest of the series into movies. I excited, Alex and I are heading up to Tulsa after school on Tuesday, to see a concert. Alex's cousin Berry and his band got signed. They started their tour on Dec. 6 and the are touring all over the U.S. and then they are going to Japan! The only part they sucks, is that we are coming back that same night, and its a heavy metal band, and those concerts last a long time. I have never driven to Tulsa before, and it is just Alex and me going. I hope I don't wreak my new car or get mugged or something like that. I can't wait to go and finally met Barry and the band. Don't even bother talking to me on Wednesday, because were getting back really late, like 3 or so in the morning, and we both have to go to school on Wednesday.......that sucks, but hey someday I might have a huge rock star for a Cousin!

Blog topic #4

This post is all about Saddam's Trial and it's events.
Sites:
Yay Saddam!
Saddam Trial
Saddam Stuff
That Crazy Saddam!
Other posts are posted on Dec. 12

Timeline of the trial
Dec. 13, 2003: Captured by U.S. soldiers Tikrit.
-June 30, 2004: Transferred to Iraqi custody.
-July 1, 2004: Arraigned before judge and rejects charges of war crimes and genocide.
-Dec.17, 2004: Sees Iraqi lawyer for first time since capture.
-June 13, 2005: Shown in video being questioned about 1982 massacre in Dujail.
-July 13, 2005: Faces first charges as tribunal chief judge says investigation into Dujail killings complete.
-Aug. 23, 2005: Fires legal team.
-Oct. 19, 2005: Pleads not guilty as trial opens in Dujail case. The first major thing I noticed was that U.S. has way more information, on every topic they wrote about. The articles were just jammed pack with information, while in the international it usually just stated the basics. "Cocaine Kate" caught my attention because the U.S. article seemed a little nicer about the subject. It did not blast her out with a shocking headline. However the international article seemed to support her more, by giving her more credit than the U.S. did. When it came to my political issue, I felt that the U.S. was more critical on the issue, which surprised me. I thought the international article was going to give a negative side, because the articles stated."Immigration spoils Bush's trip out West." however it was more of an information kind of article. In the U.S.'s article I felt was leaning to the darker side of the trip. Talking about the jails, and plans to lure in illegal immigrants. There was also some misinformation on some ones part, because one articles stated that Bush's huge speech was in El Paso, while the other said it was in Tucson, Arizona. Who knows, maybe he gave two huge speeches. The one article I found the most interesting was the on over drilling for oil in Los Angles. I was looking forward to the American point of view, but there was not one. Either this means the international article was making it up or the U.S. is trying to keep it from the public. I want to try and find out more about the situation in America and find out for myself. Besides the factors I mentioned earlier, I really didn't see a huge difference between the articles, expect for information included, and how the political issues were viewed.

Comparing U.S and International news

Mr. Fletcher I would like to apologize for this post being late. Sorry.
International-
1. http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/story-pages/showbiz/showbiz1.shtml
"Cocaine Kate" Kate Moss the 31yr. old British born model has had her first photo shoot, since battling her drug problem. Many thought her career was ruined, yet she is making a good recovery, even after many of her contracts were ripped up. The article even stated, that they support her on her fast recovery.
National- http://www.cnn.com/2005/showbiz/11/08/Kate.moss.aplindex.html
"Kate Moss" The 31yr. old model is winning the fight with her drug addition after only a month in rehab. The model just barred all in her first photo shoot since the rehab. H and M, Burberry, Chanel and Rimmel tore up her contracts after her drug abuse became public. She is one of the few models to make a good comeback.

International-
2. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,111069-1890169,00.htm
"Two Hurt at Thanksgiving Parade" Two people were hurt during the parade when an M and M's float crashed into a lightpost, knocking a bulb off. A 26yr-old and an 11yr-old were in stable condition at Bellevve Hospital Center, later on that day.
National-
"Thanksgiving parade mishap" During the Macy's Thanksgiving parade, an M and M float crashed into a lightpost causing it to fall in two sisters. An 11yr-old received head injuries, and a 26yr-old received a shoulder injury. The float might have been pushed by a gust of wind, however the wind was in the right range. In 1997 the Macy's Cat in the Hat stroke a lamppost and it toppled onto four people. It left on woman with permanet brain damage. After this incident Macy's only lets quilfiled people with training hand the floats, and they monitor the wind strength. The article really stressed, that only qualified people were aloud to handle the floats.

International
3. "Immigration spoils Bush trip out West" U.S.'s President Bush took a break from Washington out West. With stops in Arizona, Colorado, and Texas. In Tucson. AR., less than 80 miles from the Mexican border, bush outlined a tough new plan with dealing with immigration. It was a crowd pleasing speech. The current plan is "Catch and release" but the new plan will be "catch and return."
National- http;//www.cnn.com/2005/politics/11/29/bush.immigrastion/index.html
While on his break from Washington, Bush stopped in El Paso Texas, his home state to make a speech. Bush wants to "harden" immigration laws. The article was packed with information. Bush endorsed a paper to build more jail cell, speed up deports, and crack down on the fraudulent papers, and :harnding" the border, with more officers, fences, monitoring devices. Bush also wants to start a temp work program, that will match up employees with employers. The jobs would be jobs that Americans would not do. This would be an attempt to crack down on illegal immigration, because people would come and apply for the jobs. Bush will be spending a lot of money to see this through.

International-
4. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,11069-1897140,00.html
"Suburbs sprout oil derricks, as city taps into slimy past" The rusted derricks that use to pump crude oil from underneath Los Angles, have been put back to work after almost 50 years. With gas becoming scarce and prices going high, they have started the derricks again. In Signal hill an oil drill started next to StarBucks. Los Angles is an oil mine, the city was built on top of a gold mine. The oil derricks are being disguised as tropical islands with waterfalls, and palm trees. The number of abandoned wells throughout California, is decreasing. Some people are afraid that they will tear down their house, to drill for oil, because of the profit. Some people might not have a choice because their house may be built on top of a major oil site. People may become crazy for the profits that oil holds.
National- There was no article to this article at the national level.

What a weekend

Well Happy Late Thanksgiving! I think I gained 15 pounds, for eating so much. I had three huge dinners, three days in a row! Then on the other days I just wouldn't stop eating. My pants are a little tight. I had this great plan to get a lot of big homework projects done, like the other huge blog topic.........but eating took up the majority of my holiday.......and shopping. Now I feel guilty because a lot of big projects are still lingering, waiting to be done......and they are still collecting dust. But, I had a great weekend!

Lazy

I suck at keeping up my blog! My post to Mr. Fletcher was wrong, Samuel Alito is President Bush's new candidate for Supreme Court Justice. Sorry for the mix up. Samuel Alito is a white male in his late 30's early 40's. From other people's opinions he is a very right winged, or a very conservative kind of guy. Once again some people feel that he is just not the right kind of guy for the job, however President Bush can't make everybody happy. Bush needs to find someone with a good thorough knowledge of the court system and our nations laws. Bush needs to pick a candidate that the majority of the nation respects and likes. Bush is in a hard spot because of the person he picks; some people will like him and other people will hate him.

Supreme Court Justices

Sandra Day O'Connor is currently the Supreme Court Justices, however she has recalled her title, and on October 3, President Bush named Harriet Miers as a nominee for the position. Pres. Bush needs to find someone with a great knowledge of the U.S. court systems and laws, as well as someone the people respect and admire, or at least the majoritry of Americans like. Pres, Bush feels that Harriet Miers a 60 year old who was the first woman to head the state Bar of Texas, would be a good pick. However most people feel that she is not right for the position because she has never been a judge before in her life, there for they feel she does not have enough hands on training to be right for the job. I agree, we need someone wit a lot of experience under their belt. In the end though I feel Harriet Miers will win because Pres. Bush favors her so. A lot of Americans still look up to Pres. Bush and will support him in his decision to pick her.........Only time will tell.

Overwhelmed

Is anyone else feeling stressed and overwhelmed lately, or just plain lazy? I have been lately, maybe it's the weather? Or a better guess it must be the water.....Yeah lets blame it on our glowing water. Its Wednesday but it feels like it should be Friday. Erin told me today that we only have 200 days left until graduation, including holidays and weekends. I can not believe we are seniors. So where are you guys planning on going to college at. I always wanted to run far far away, like Erin is doing, but I am too much of a family girl to move very far away. I am either going to go to Pitt or MSSU, MSSU is looking a little better because I have a chance on a full ride.....I haven't made up my mind. The Bird Flu has been popping up all over the place, people are scared and governments are preparing for the worse. I getting what ever kind of a shot I can to help me fight the flu. I'm sick as most others are and the weather is always changing making every thing worse. It's scary all these new things popping up, and there is really nothing we can do other than try and stay healthy. This year is going to be a hard one when it comes to diseases and such and we should be prepared for the worst. "What should the U.S./U.N.'s role be in a major pandemic of a life threathing illness." I believe every country and states should have detailed plans on what to do in the event of a major outbreak. We have plans for everything else, why not add this as well. Some places like Canada are trying to get enough flu shots for every person to have two. Canada is taking a step toward preventing an outbreak and they are educating the public on the issues. Other country's and states should follow their example and make plans of their own. The general welfare of the people should be the top priority. The government and the citizens should be equally informed on plans and steps to prevent outbreaks. Here are some sites to educate your mind on the avian Flu.
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/homeaffairs/story/0,11026,1596258,00.html
http://www.who.int/csr.disease/avain_influenza.en/
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4337918.stm
www.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/conditions/10/10/birdflu.warning.sp/
www.nature.com/nature/focus/birdflu/

I'm bored

I have been sitting her at my computer for a couple of hours, trying to get homewrok done for like fifty different classes and reasons, blogs...quizs........zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
